What is Baby Theatre?

San Francisco Youth Theatre’s ‘Night, Sky is set to open June 19-21 at Eclectic Box, 446 Valencia, SF. We’re super excited about our first production for very, very young audiences, and we’re getting lots of great questions from patrons and colleagues about this show for children ages 0-30 months.

In short, theatre for the very, very young (aka: Baby Theatre), is a performance for babies that is child-centered including movement, lighting, and props that is best enjoyed by children ages 0-30 months.

A play for babies shares some similarities to a play for older children and adults—there are actors, scenery, props, and other theatrical elements. All of the adult performers have spent lots of time preparing, and the directors and designers are making sure the show looks and sounds great!

Unlike most traditional plays, baby theatre invites audiences to sit very close to the playing area—on stage in this case. The close proximity to the players allows for actors to connect with babies and their caregivers more easily. Because the experience is designed with lots of age appropriate interactivity, having babies close to the action is important—they can have a better view of scenic elements like giant mobiles and soft, twinkling overhead lights. Plus, the players can directly engage very young audience members with calm voices and gentle actions.

And unlike adult theatre, a sleeping baby at the end of the performance is a compliment—it means your child felt comfortable, soothed, and engaged. Come ready to sit close, follow your baby’s lead, and enjoy a peaceful introduction to the wonder of live performance.
