Our collaborative teaching artist staff will partner with you to bring the best experience to your students. SFYT offers Artist-In-Schools residencies and performances to schools, homeschools, libraries and other community-based organizations.

PreK-12 classes and workshops include: acting; story theatre; dance and creative movement; music and choir; visual arts; audition preparation; script writing, spoken word and performance ensembles.

SFYT teaching artists excel at working with students from marginalized populations, including students with disabilities and students who identify as LGBTQIA+. We tailor each class to your student’s needs and interests.

Spanish Language Instruction

As part of our mission to provide fully-accessible programming to San Francisco youth, SFYT offers classes available in Spanish or Bilingual Spanish-English. Creating art in one’s home language can open and deepen creative possibilities.

Classes are taught by teaching artists who are Spanish-native speakers, fostering cultural sensitivity, and connecting with students socially, linguistically and emotionally.

Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) Instruction

For the past five years, SFYT has provided theater, music, and creative movement to young students who are DHH at César Chávez Elementary School.  We have collaborate with DHH classroom teachers, ASL interpreters and educational specialists that work with the children. Classes are led by SFYT Teaching Artist Maica Folch and dancer Antoine Hunter as a frequent guest artist.

Teaching Artists use the language of expressive movement to create activities that resonate with the children in the room. Physical theater, movement, rhythm, and improvisation games are used as vehicles to empower children who are DHH to communicate their emotions physically, while developing spatial awareness. We emphasize collaborative learning among children. ASL, with its linguistic use of time and space, presents a unique and wonderful opportunity to combine movement forms with communication, sparking the imagination and creative expression.
