The Afterlife shows the fragility of contemporary life, how uttering a single insult ignites a conflict that leaves a young man dead. In the restroom of a nightclub, Chuy, the good-natured protagonist, remarks to a boy his age wearing yellow shoes, “I like your shoes.” The hot-tempered teen feels he’s being made fun of and stabs Chuy to death. Dead, Chuy floats in a ghostly limbo meeting Crystal, a suicide victim with her own tragic story, and a homeless woman, dying on the street. The story shuttles between the experience of loss and anger felt both by the living left behind and those who have passed on.
The Afterlife is a powerful theatrical experience that reminds teen audiences of their importance in the world and the impact their actions have on others. Gary Soto has created a beautiful work of theatre that opens doors for exploration and healing.
SFYT is looking for one actor to play YELLOW SHOES to join its DREAM Ensemble for our upcoming tour to Bosnia! If you are an 18-24 year old male with acting experience and the ability to move (this is a stage combat part), please send a photo and resume to Dyana.Diaz@sfyouththeatre.org
